Walking
The Gers is a great region for walking with many quiet but well maintained randonnées (designated walking/cycling/riding routes) through beautiful countryside, and, of course, the pilgrimage routes of St Jacques de Compostelle two of which pass through the region, one coming within 2 miles of Pécoyne. We can provide you with maps of the local randonnées.
Cycling
The same network of randonnées for walking is also available for cycling if you prefer to stay off roads. Many of the roads in the Gers have little traffic, however, if you want to go further afield.
Golf
Golf is becoming increasingly popular in France, and there are several good 18-hole courses within around 30 minutes of Pécoyne. Particularly good courses are the Chateau de Pollanne at Tillac and Golf de Guinlet near Eauze, which has a country club type complex with swimming-pool etc. The golf course at Auch, 30 minutes from Pécoyne, has just been upgraded to 18 holes.
Tennis
Most local towns have tennis courts which can be rented. Our nearest is in Vic-Fezensac, 15 minutes away.
Swimming and Watersports
A new water complex has just been opened in the town of Mirande, 30 minutes from Pécoyne. Amid 800 square metres of pools, it has spas, flumes and paddling pools for children, There are also beach and volley ball pitches and games facilities for children. The entry fee for the day is 5€ (about £3.50) for adults and 4€ for children.
Motor-racing
If the peace and quiet of the Gers gets too much, the town of Nogaro, about 40 minutes away, has a circuit which holds F3 racing, motorbike racing, karting etc.
Horse-racing
There are many small courses in lovely settings around the Gers which hold intermittent programmes of flat racing and trotting; they are well run, and you can get close up to the action without big crowds. The nearest to Pécoyne is in Vic-Fezensac, 15 minutes away. Close also is the course at Castéra-Verduzan, which also has a casino and thermal baths. The closest major race-course with a full programme of racing, offering a delightful day out, is at Pau about 2 hours away.
Beaches
The Atlantic coast, though not on our doorstep, is easily reachable in around 2 hours for a day out. There are many beaches, from the fashionable resorts of Biarritz and St-Jean-de-Luz in the south, to the quieter beaches further north.
The Mediterranean is a bit further, about 3 hours, but on the French motorways it's by no means a painful experience to get there - unless you pick a busy French holiday of course!
Skiing
If you're here in-season (usually between November and April), the ski resorts of the Domaine de Toumalet, Barèges and La Mongie in the largest skiing centre of the French Pyrénees are within easy reach for a day out. |
