The department of the Gers is in the Midi-Pyrénées region in the south-west of France, in the heart of Gascony. Lying central to the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts to the east and west, and the Dordogne and the Pyrénées mountains to the north and south.
Whether as a result of its low population, lack of any major industry outside agriculture or absence of any principle motorway, coming to the Gers is truly like going back in time to the peaceful, unspoilt France that in many other areas has been lost. With its quiet roads, pure air – the cleanest in Europe – and beautiful rolling countryside, the Gers really is somewhere to relax and forget the stresses of modern life.
That's not to say by any means that there's nothing to do or see here! The department is rich in history and culture, busy market towns brimming with the delicious products of the region, and is home to a plethora of fêtes and festivals (click on Festivals and Fêtes and Places to Visit for more details).
Whether sporting or recreational, there is no shortage of ways to enjoy Gascony's wonderful countryside and climate - click on Things to do in the Gers.
The official website of the Gers www.gers-gascogne.com is a very good site covering all aspects of the region and has a complete English version.
